A breakdown of the patented Virtual Meter technology

Non-intrusive whole-home consumption monitoring

The EET Virtual Meter is a simple, non-intrusive way of accurately monitoring electricity usage without installing metering hardware on every circuit. Instead of directly measuring current, it continuously observes the voltage of one phase and detects the tiny changes that occur whenever a device switches on or off on any of the three phases of a household.

Voltage signatures as a source of insight

Every household appliance or home energy product (e.g. PV) causes a characteristic voltage drop or rise depending on how much power it draws or feeds back into the system. Even though each appliance is only connected to one out of three phases, it causes a shift in NPE voltage. This in turn is causing very small changes on the voltage of the other phases – making the household electricity usage measurable via any of the three phases.

Active measurement for greater precision

In addition to the passive voltage monitoring, the Virtual Meter enhances accuracy further through an active measurement method. It superimposes a high-frequency current into the phase conductor and observes how the household wiring and connected appliances respond. Each device creates a unique high-frequency impedance pattern – almost like an electrical fingerprint.

Powerful data: AI-powered load identification

By combining the patterns from the active and passive measurements with our machine learning algorithms, the EET Virtual Meter can accurately deduce how much power is being used, when it is being used, and even which device is responsible. This enables deep insight into household energy consumption using only a single measurement point—simple, efficient, and installed in seconds.

FAQs
What is the EET Virtual Meter?

The EET Virtual Meter is a plug-in energy consumption metering technology that monitors whole-home electricity consumption using a single phase connection anywhere in the household, for example a standard wall socket.

The Virtual Meter continuously tracks voltage patterns and neutral shifts caused by household loads. Additionally, it injects tiny high-frequency signals into the phase conductor to read device-specific impedance patterns. Together, these signals allow machine-learning models to estimate usage and detect device activity with high accuracy.

Unlike conventional meters, the EET Virtual Meter has low hardware cost, requires no installation, and works from any wall socket. Smart meters require an installer, need metering cabinet space, depend on a stable (basement) Wi-Fi, and often cannot provide the actual real-time data needed for energy optimization.

Yes. We offer the firmware for licensing. Optionally, we also offer the PCBA with licensed firmware or a white-label hardware product with the licensed technology, ready for B2C sale (e.g. in form of a smart plug).

Yes. It detects a wide range of loads—from traditional resistive appliances to modern devices with switched-mode power supplies—and can identify characteristic signatures for accurate energy insights.

Any application that relies on real-time or near-real-time consumption data, including home energy management systems (HEMS), flexibility services, demand response, PV optimization, heat pump control, and EV charging management.
